NICU Visiting Hours

You are welcome to be with your baby any time you’d like. The following guidelines provide a private and safe place for the families and babies.

  • All visitors must be with one of the infant's parents or guardian with appropriate identification.
  • All visitors and parents must sign the logbook at the front desk when arriving and sign out when leaving.
  • Two visitors at a time may be with the parents at the bedside.
  • Children under 16 who are not brothers or sisters of the baby may not go into the nursery but are welcome in the Family Lounge.

Level III NICU in Central Massachusetts and Beyond

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at UMass Memorial Medical Center – Children’s Medical Center is the region’s only Level III NICU, caring for extremely premature babies and newborns with complex medical needs. A Level III NICU is equipped to treat babies born as early as 22 weeks gestation. You have the ability to save a life—or even several lives—by being an organ and tissue donor. And you can do this in two ways:

  • Designate on your driver’s license that you wish to be an organ donor upon your death
  • Become a living organ donor by donating one of your kidneys

Kidney Transplant

Recognized as a 5-tier kidney transplant center by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients

A kidney (renal) transplant is surgery in which a healthy kidney from a donor is placed into your body and takes over the job of filtering your blood. The donor is a person who has just died or a living person, most often a family member.

If you don’t have a living donor who can give you a kidney, your UMass Memorial transplant team will place you on a national waiting list for a kidney from a deceased donor. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) maintains this waiting list.

The average wait time for a kidney transplant from a deceased donor is 3 to 5 years at most centers.
