Ahh relaxation; it seems like a distant memory, right? With our busy lives, sometimes we can get caught up in work, family and the long list of responsibilities we pack in our day. We often don't have time to take care of ourselves let alone fully unwind. We polled a handful of people and asked what specific things they like to do when they are feeling overwhelmed. If you're in need of some inspiration on how to take a break from your routine, here are some ideas:

Mindful and Creative Activities

  1. Color yourself calm. That's right, crayons aren't just for kids! Adult coloring offers notable mental and cognitive benefits. Its meditative and repetitive nature can reduce stress and anxiety, while enhancing focus and concentration by grounding you in the present moment. Coloring and other crafts also promote creativity and help you find a healthy outlet for self-expression. Practices like Zentangle partner coloring with meditation for an extra relaxation bonus!
  2. Melt into the couch with that book you've been eager to start. Whether it be sci-fi or a memoir, a good book has the power to transport you into a different world. Take some time to immerse yourself in a novel and escape from the hustle and bustle of your busy life.
  3. Find your Zen with a sun-salutation. Practicing yoga will not only improve your physical health but it's also a very common form of relaxation. A low-intensity, stretch-based workout is meant to help you connect your mind and body, diminishing stress.
  4. Breathe in 2, 3, 4. Breathe out 2, 3, 4. Meditation is a common form of leisure. Connecting your mind, body and soul allows you to be more present in your everyday life.

Physical and Outdoor Refresh

  1. Give your lawn a small spruce up. Weeding, mowing and raking leaves may all surprisingly be satisfying. Manicuring your lawn or garden can make you feel both at ease and accomplished, the perfect approach for someone who is always on the go.
  2. Clear your mind with a few miles. Walking, running and biking are two relaxation techniques that truly can put your mind at ease. The consistency of both these activities allows you to focus your thoughts and de-stress.
  3. Wipe, dust or mop up your worry. Believe it or not, some can find serenity in cleaning. Tackling a lingering mess can make you feel accomplished and focus your mind on something simple, yet productive. This way, you're taking away the anxiety of the mess and decluttering your mind.
  4. Browse the discount section of your favorite store, even the $1 section at Target. Not only can this little slice of heaven put you in a great mood, but it truly can lead you to some neat stuff.

Social and Sensory Experiences

  1. Dust off that old deck of cards. Before leaving the house in the morning, grab a deck of cards to play with your co-workers at lunch. A good game of Spite and Malice can help you recharge so you're ready to take on the rest of your day.
  2. Master those scrumptious recipes you've been collecting. Cooking and baking are hobbies that refocus your attention and declutter your mind. For a stress busting social boost, invite friends over to enjoy some of the delicious dishes you've whipped up.
  3. Don't forget to stop and smell the roses. No, seriously! Aromatherapy is an excellent way to put your mind at ease. Scents like lavender and eucalyptus unwind your body and send your mind into full relaxation mode. Try burning some candles or incense or set up a diffuser with your favorite essential oils.
  4. Let the sounds of a storm wash your worries away. There's something so calming about falling asleep to the sound of rain. Luckily, you don't have to wait around for mother nature. There are plenty of music-streaming and meditation apps that allow you to listen to hours of rain, wind and other sounds in nature.
  5. Find peace in your pet. The unconditional love of a pet can make your stress seem so distant. If you're in need of a break, spend some time cuddling on the couch or playing tug-o-war with your pup.
  6. Indulge in that much needed massage. It's okay to pamper yourself every so often. Sometimes your body could use the manual treatment of a therapeutic massage! Find a massage therapist, and schedule that full body massage you've been wanting.
  7. Take advantage of the seventh-inning stretch. Switch on the game and forget all the worries of your week. Find relaxation in your favorite sports team.
