Types of Measures

Types of Quality Measures Used at UMass Memorial

We use several quality measures across UMass Memorial, including:

  • Process measures assess whether a specific, evidence-based patient safety activity or step was correctly performed, indicating the reliability of the health care system.
  • Outcome measures reflect the ultimate impact of care on the patient, such as the actual incidence of harm (e.g., surgical site infection rate, readmission rate) or positive results.

What Are Quality Measures?

Quality measures are essential for tracking and evaluating our performance in quality and patient safety. These measures:

  • Provide insight into our progress
  • Help us improve our performance
  • Enable us to report data to regulatory and quality rating agencies, our patients and the public

Quality measures also help our patients understand our quality and safety performance in important aspects of inpatient care, including:

  • Patient outcomes
  • Surgical site infection rates
  • Medication adherence rates
